A native of Duluth, Minnesota, Don Melander recently moved to Punta Gorda, FL. Initially a self taught artist, he has also studied with internationally renowned teachers such as author and watercolorist Tony Couch, Australian watercolor artist Robert Wade, and master artist Cheng-Khee Chee.
Don paints charming and delicate watercolors, and renders pencil drawings in a realistic style. His landscapes often contain a building, barn, lighthouse, boat, or other man-made object with the goal of preserving the individuality of these common objects. "Inspired by man-made objects, my artwork often depicts the dreams of others cast aside, such as an abandoned fishing shack or boathouse." Through his art he strives to capture and preserve on paper a single moment in time. His compelling watercolor scenes encourage the viewer's curiousity to ask what it was, what it may have been, or wonder what lies around the bend.
The winner of multiple awards, including first place in judged and juried shows, Melander teaches drawing and watercolor classes at the Englewood Art Center, a division of the Ringling College of Art & Design in Sarasota. He has had the opportunity to teach workshops locally and nationally. Melander is a member of the Minnesota Arrowhead Art Club, and is an active member of numerous Charlotte County and Sarasota County Art Centers.
