ARTIST NEWS

Arts & Humanities' Art in Public Places Program.

I like to paint, but I love to draw!  Paper and pencils were my favorite childhood toys, which led to studying art in college, and later attending art school.  After taking a workshop in colored pencil in the early 90’s, when it was a newly emerging medium, I quickly became fascinated with its versatility and simplicity, and continued to study with a private instructor for eight years.  I felt I had found the perfect medium for me – one which combined my love of drawing, color, and detail, and - no mess!  As my skills improved, it was gratifying to watch colored pencil grow in popularity, and become an accepted medium in major art shows and galleries.

I spent most of my life living on the Connecticut shoreline, so maritime themes are my specialty.  Since moving to Florida in 2002, I have broadened my subject matter to include the beautiful flora and fauna of this area.

Although colored pencil has many advantages, it requires much preliminary work, and each piece presents challenges, from inspiration to completion.  Satisfaction is found in the creative problem-solving process, and in the hoped-for successful completion of the artwork.  I prefer a minimalist approach to art, and my goal is to capture the essence of the subject and achieve a clean, uncluttered look.  My favorite painters are Turner, Whistler, Homer, and Andrew Wyeth.  I also admire the simplicity in the works of contemporary marine artists Jeff Sobol and Anne Packard.  I like to work in other dry mediums such as graphite, charcoal, and pastel pencil, and also alkyd oils.  And I am excited to be learning a new medium – metalpoint drawing, a revival of an old masters’ technique.

I am a member of the Visual Arts Center, Arts & Humanities Council  of Charlotte County, Colored Pencil Society of America, and the American Society of Marine Artists.

Giclees

In addition to original paintings, giclee prints of original art are now also available at Sea Grape. Giclees are high quality digital reproductions of paintings printed on archival paper or canvas, using archival inks.  Giclees faithfully capture the beauty of the original work, and are fade resistant and long lasting.  Giclees are usually printed in limited editions, and are signed and numbered by the artist.  These prints have become increasingly popular at galleries as an economical alternative for the consumer. Since giclees can be printed individually as needed, and are available in different sizes and prices, customers are able to obtain an image that exactly suits their decor needs. Several of Sea Grape's two-dimensional artists have  giclee prints of their artwork available in specially marked bins, so stop in and browse!
